Enter the home of the famous 18th-century writer and philosopher, but above all, don't forget to say hello to him - the Lord of Ferney is everywhere in his castle !
Voltaire is popular ! Both during his lifetime and after his death, he was widely portrayed.
At Ferney, in his castle, which he rebuilt himself, you can see sculptures, paintings, engravings and 18th-century "goodies": medallions, miniature busts and various objects that his guests would leave with !
Among the major works on display during the tour, his official portrait, a pastel attributed to Maurice-Quentin de La Tour, shows him in a three-quarter bust, with a book open and a proud, lively gaze. He is 41 years old.
You will also discover the "Natural Portrait of François-Marie Arouet de Voltaire", a marble bust sculpted by Jean-Antoine Houdon. Voltaire was old and ill, and died just a few months after this bust was made. Yet his laughing eyes, full of mischief and true to his image as a man honoured and adulated by his contemporaries, make him more alive and timeless than ever.
Lord of Ferney, Voltaire welcomes you to the vestibule of his chateau. His statue depicts him in noble dress, crown on his head, book closed and in a relaxed posture. His mocking smile immediately immerses you in the atmosphere of his residence, where lively conversations are in full swing between the many guests who flock to meet him every day.
