Discover the chateau where Voltaire spent the last twenty years of his life !
Voltaire, the writer, the philosopher, the man of the theatre, the poet. But did you know that he was also a lord ?
Discover the history of his château !
Voltaire in Ferney is first and foremost the story of the construction of a chateau to live in and welcome the many guests who, around the famous philosopher, formed the Europe of the Enlightenment.
It's also the story of a village transformed into a thriving city, where factories flourished, showcasing Ferney's craftsmanship, spurred on by the writer who wore many hats: architect, town planner, patron of the arts...
Working on the development of his seigneury, welcoming visitors and writing, Voltaire was tireless and never stopped working from his château in Ferney.
A private residence for the following centuries, Voltaire's chateau was sold to the French state in 1999.
Restored as a national monument in 2018, it is open to the public all year round.
